I know that parents are supposed to teach their children; the reality is that they teach us many things too.

With my boys I used to just get a subject started.  I had my plan in place but they would ask questions that I couldn’t have anticipated so we would look up the answers and I ended up learning something.  I remember the sparkle in their little eyes when they figured out that we had learned something together.

When it comes to new ways of doing things and new technology the kids are the experts.  You can learn together.

A good way to start environmental topics is to get them simple things to play with that are environmentally friendly.  It can be as simple as a coloring book, a solar robot kit or even a friendly bath toy. You can also have them help you with things like recycling, and saving energy by having them learn to shut off the lights and other appliances when they are not in use.  Some electric companies have an outreach program designed just for kids to teach them about electricity.

When you do this you are getting them familiar with the environment and some of the problems that we are trying to solve.  You are pointing out something valuable solutions that they will use later in life.

You can also ask some questions:
How does solar energy work?- You have to make it fun.  The videos at the blog can help.
How does it save us money?- Now I know that this is a topic that many kids don’t really care about so you have to explain it in terms that they understand like “ When Mom and Dad save money on bills they have more to get new toys with.”
You can go over benefits:
Not buying batteries.
No drilling.
The sun is there and is easy to use.

Now you are ready to give them a piece of recycled paper or sit them at the computer and let them draw pictures and write about their ideas.

Imagination is a powerful source of solutions.

How many inventors have said that their idea came from a toy that mom or dad got them or from a lesson that was done when they were little?
